Winter blahs call for colour (and tasty nutrition) on the plate, and “lots of water, and stretching”. I’ll add more birdwatching, and more travel to that list, too. Bring on the New Year !

The aroma of supper roasting is also a convenient way to warm the house until the wood stove kicks in. Last night’s [...]

eat your winter veg

There are a few shots I food styled recently with photographer Jim Norton and prop stylist Martine Blackhurst of Rustica. Art Director Vicki Hornsby assigned a fabulous colour palatte to this story, and I love the teal, blues and metallic touches that made these {always} delicious recipes by Jane Rodmell cookbook author, All the Best Fine Foods owner [...]

Todays rain was the perfect excuse NOT to catch up on yardwork.
Instead, I headed over to 66 Gilead Distillery for an astonishing vodka sampling that included their Canadian Pine Vodka, Whole Wheat Vodka, and Rye Vodka… all made on site. Read the full story about the distillery in the current issue of Grapevine Magazine here.

Next off to [...]

sweetbreads by any other name

Aigo Bouido, also known as Garlic Soup      Vicki’s Veggies Blue Ribbon-winning Garlic
I’ver been procrastinating for a day or two now for the chore I’m really not looking forward to….cleaning sweetbreads for a recipe we’re photographing this week. I’m sure they’ll be delicious, but alas, they sure look some aweful. Not difficult to buy [...]

I was so pleased to find the food as delicious as the exhuerance of the decor, at South Indian Dosa Mahal 416-516-7701, located at 1262 Bloor St W, closed Sundays and Holidays.
Celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in business, the colour here is PINK PINK PINK! which I actually LOVED on yet another grey afternoon.
They specialize in South [...]

Today YesterdayI bought a Kakai (or Styrian) pumpkin from my friends Sandi and Ed Taylor, at Honey Wagon Farms near Picton. They take many a squash (and other veggies & herbs all grown without chemicals…plus their superb Maple Syrup) to the Kingston Public Market on Saturdays.Despite having their biggest days of the year around Thanksgiving, [...]

Vietnamese for lunch

One of the very first things I do when I get back to Toronto, is to seek out some favourite spots for a quick, cheap, and delicious lunch. I think I’ll start posting “what’s for lunch” now and again. When I’m at home in the County, I rarely eat out and gather fresh ingredients close [...]

carrot cupcakes

I’ve been developing this Carrot Cupcake recipe for a client, and brought a batch over to my friends at Vicki’s Veggies for a sampling. They could have possibly been the most enthusiastic group of recipe tasters I’ve ever shared with!
I’m not sure how many pounds of carrots, tomatoes, beets, beans, corn, or garlic that same [...]

It was my first attempt at jellymaking , so I wanted to try it the old fashioned way by using only whole apples (with naturally occurring pectin) and sugar. Green Mitsu and a few red Cortlands gave the finished jelly a lovely blush, and helped use up a few apples that were hit by a [...]
